Copenhagen is, in a word, charming. The prevailing allure is the foundation of ‘Hygge’, best translated as a combination of cosiness, comfort, friendliness and contentment. In practice, this is a city filled with considered design, delicious food, and stylish people, with an abundance of inviting cafes, pedestrian-only streets, and decadent pastries in cosy bakeries.
It makes for a calm, leisurely atmosphere and encourages travellers to explore the city. Stroll along the canals for access to the infamous gingerbread houses in vivid, candy coloured hues.
It’s no secret that Denmark has long been on the front foot when it comes to carbon neutrality, circularity and slow consumption. Bike riding is incredibly accessible (and the preferred mode of transportation), public transit is affordable, and there are no shortage of slow fashion and concept shops and slow food restaurants.
The food was delectable. Fresh, inventive, and decorative. Not surprising from a city that boasts over a dozen Michelin starred restaurants.
